शून्यं साम्यसमुच्चये

Why it works: Śūnyaṃ Sāmyasamuccaye

If f(x) = g(x) and both sides have the form where a common factor x+kx+k appears in the sum of terms, then x+k=0x+k=0 is a root. This catches algebraic structure that makes one term vanish.

Example Problems

(2x+3)/(x+1)=(2x+5)/(x+3)(2x+3)/(x+1) = (2x+5)/(x+3)= x=7/2x = -7/2
(x+1)(x+2)=(x+3)(x+4)(x+1)(x+2) = (x+3)(x+4)= x=3x = -3
